Two former UEFA Champions League winners meet in the quarter-finals as Bayern München welcome Inter Milan for the first leg.

Bayern, who claimed their sixth European Cup in 2020, reached a sixth successive quarter-final with a 5-0 aggregate defeat of German champions Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16.

Inter – Champions League winners in 2010, when they beat Bayern in the final in Madrid – recorded a 4-1 aggregate defeat of Feyenoord in the last 16 to reach the quarter-finals for only the second time in 14 seasons.

Aldo Serena and Nicola Berti gave Inter a first-leg win in Munich but Bayern scored three goals in eight first-half minutes in Milan through Roland Wohlfarth, Klaus Augenthaler and Jürgen Wegmann. Although Serena pulled one back, Bayern went through on away goals.

Felix Magath's Bayern won in Milan through late goals from Claudio Pizarro and Lukas Podolski, Inter reduced to nine men by the dismissals of Zlatan Ibrahimović and Fabio Grosso. Patrick Vieira's added-time equaliser earned Roberto Mancini's visitors a 1-1 draw in the Munich return, cancelling out Roy Makaay's opener.

A 90th-minute Mario Gomez goal gave Bayern a first-leg win at San Siro but Inter became only the second side to progress in a Champions League knockout tie after losing the home first leg thanks to away goals from Samuel Eto'o and, after Gomez and Thomas Müller had restored and extended Bayern's aggregate advantage, Wesley Sneijder and, in the 88th minute, Goran Pandev.

Bayern beat Lazio 3-1 on aggregate in last season's round of 16, overturning a 1-0 first-leg loss in Rome with a 3-0 home success.

That made the Munich club's record in two-legged ties against Italian teams W7 L7; they have won all four since their 2011 defeat by Inter.

Defeat at Lazio ended Bayern's 12-game unbeaten run against Italian clubs (W10 D2) –the second-leg win was a seventh successive victory at home to Serie A sides.

Bayern's European Cup quarter-final record is W21 L13; they had lost three in a row before beating Arsenal last season (2-2 a, 1-0 h).

Beaten 4-3 on aggregate by Real Madrid in last season's semi-finals, six-time European champions Bayern have now reached the quarter-finals or better in 13 of their last 14 Champions League campaigns.

Bayern were 3-0 winners at home to Leverkusen in this season's round of 16 and have won 25 of their last 31 home Champions League games, drawing five – the only loss 2-3 to Paris Saint-Germain in the 2020/21 quarter-final first leg. Their home record this season is W5 D1.

This is Inter's third game against a Bundesliga club this season. They beat Leipzig 1-0 at San Siro on Matchday 5, but lost by the same scoreline at Bayer Leverkusen in the next set of fixtures.

The win at home to Leipzig is one of only five in Inter's last 18 games against German clubs, a run that includes 11 defeats.

Wins at Borussia Mönchengladbach (3-2) on Matchday 5 of the 2020/21 Champions League and Bayern (3-2) in March 2011 are Inter's only successes in their last 12 matches away to Bundesliga clubs (D3 L7), although they did beat Leverkusen 2-1 in 2020 in neutral Düsseldorf.

This is Inter's first two-legged knockout contest against a German club since a 0-1 aggregate defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League round of 16. Their aggregate record is now W8 L6.

Inter's record in European Cup quarter-finals is W9 L4. They have lost four of their seven ties in the Champions League era.

Runners-up to Manchester City in the 2023 final, losing 1-0 in Istanbul – Inter's most successful Champions League campaign since lifting the trophy in 2010 – Simone Inzaghi's side lost on penalties to Atlético de Madrid in last season's round of 16.

A 2-0 first-leg victory at Feyenoord in this season's round of 16 made it 11 wins in Inter's last 27 away Champions League games (D7 L9), and nine in the last 18.

Benjamin Pavard scored 12 goals in 163 appearances for Bayern between 2019 and 2023, winning four Bundesliga titles and lifting the Champions League, DFB-Pokal, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in 2020. Pavard also spent three seasons at Stuttgart between 2016 and 2019.

Yann Sommer signed for Bayern in January 2023 after eight-and-a-half seasons with Borussia Mönchengladbach, making 25 appearances and winning the Bundesliga.

On Saturday Bayern confirmed that Thomas Müller will end his 25-year association with the club when his contract expires this summer. Müller has the most Bayern appearances on 743, is third on their all-time scorer's list with 247 goals and has won 33 trophies, including 12 Bundesliga titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2013 and 2020.

Bayern came from behind to win 3-1 at Augsburg on Friday, making it 16 goals in their last six Bundesliga games.

On 29 March they won 3-2 against St. Pauli, Leroy Sané scoring twice after also being on target in a 1-1 draw at Union Berlin two weeks earlier.

Sané has nine Bundesliga goals this season, a new personal best.

Harry Kane, who scored Bayern's opener against St. Pauli and got the second on Friday, has 23 goals in this season's Bundesliga and 39 in 46 games for club and country.

Michael Olise set up Kane's goal at Augsburg, his tenth Bundesliga assist of the season.

Jamal Musiala got Bayern's first on Friday, his 12th Bundesliga goal of the campaign equalling his best return set in 2022/23.

Leon Goretzka scored for Germany in a 2-1 UEFA Nations League quarter-final win in Italy on 20 March before Joshua Kimmich and Musiala were on target three days later in a 3-3 second-leg draw.

Olise helped France to qualify for the Nations League semi-finals with his first international goal in a 2-0 second-leg win against Croatia on 23 March.

Musiala was forced off early in the second half on Friday with a hamstring injury.

On Saturday Inter let slip a two-goal half-time lead to draw 2-2 at Parma.

Marcus Thuram scored Inter's second goal, his 14th in the league this season – a new career best.

A 2-1 win at home to Udinese on 30 March had made it three successive Serie A victories – and five in all competitions.

Marko Arnautović has scored three goals in his last four Serie A appearances.

On 2 April Hakan Çalhanoğlu – who became the first Turkish player to score 50 Serie A goals in a 3-2 comeback win against Monza on 8 March – got Inter's goal in a 1-1 against city rivals AC Milan in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals. The return leg will be played on 23 April.

Yann Bisseck made his Germany debut as a substitute in a 3-3 UEFA Nations League draw against Italy on 23 March. Alessandro Bastoni, Nicolò Barella and David Frattesi were all involved as Italy lost 4-5 on aggregate.

Alessandro Bastoni went off at half-time on Saturday with a knee injury.

A thigh injury means Mehdi Taremi has not played since scoring twice in a 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan on 25 March, a result that booked Iran's place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Denzel Dumfries has been out since 16 March, also with a thigh injury.

Piotr Zieliński has been out with a calf injury since making a brief substitute appearance against Monza.
