Aleksander Čeferin, UEFA President:
The start of a new football season in the European club competitions is always a reason for celebration among those who sincerely appreciate our beautiful sport.
The UEFA Super Cup match, bringing together the respective holders of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League titles, is a traditional fixture on the European club football calendar. This is not only because it heralds another exciting and memorable season, but also because it allows us to pay tribute to the two participating teams for their historic achievements during the previous campaign.
In 2022/23, Manchester City were worthy Champions League winners for the first time. The English side enjoyed an outstanding adventure that earned plaudits from the most discerning observers. Their opponents Sevilla have virtually made the Europa League title their own, bringing the trophy back to Spain last season for a record seventh time.
This year the vibrant port city of Piraeus, enriched with a history that can be traced back to ancient Greece, has the privilege of staging this prestigious match. The magnificent Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, known for hosting games at the 2004 Olympic football tournament, is a fitting venue for this highly anticipated encounter.
Expect an atmosphere charged with passion as both teams strive to add this coveted trophy to their collection of accolades. My wish is that you enjoy the match and forge unforgettable memories during your time in Piraeus. May the best team win!
Panagiotis Baltakos, President of the Hellenic Football Federation
I welcome you to Greece, the country which gave birth to democracy, philosophy, theatre, poetry and the Olympic Games.
For Greek football and the Hellenic Football Federation, it is a great honour to host the 2023 UEFA Super Cup at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, with the participation of two major clubs, UEFA Champions League winners Manchester City and UEFA Europa League victors Sevilla.
Hosting this great contest in our country is the beginning of a warm welcome to major football events, with the UEFA Europa Conference League final taking place at the Agia Sofia Stadium in May 2024. All of this is tangible evidence of the upward trajectory of Greek football and the progress made in recent times.
In addition, this uptrend can be seen through our revived men’s national team, as well as the forward strides taken by our other national sides. Greek football is ready to meet the challenge of hosting the UEFA Super Cup, always with the undivided support and help of UEFA, as well as the upcoming great challenges ahead, for which we are working hard and methodically.
I welcome you again with the certainty that we will witness a football match worthy of the fame and history of the two clubs.
